Some people are very visual. Some people are very verbal. And most people are somewhere in between. But, when someone doesn't understand what you're saying, a great questions to ask is "when you think, do you see images or words?" Because, sometimes they don't even know. And then you can try to find a better way to describe your thoughts for them.
